1. Culture, Religion and Mental Health

We discuss cultural explanatory models for symptoms of mental health, including karma, reincarnation, sprit possession, curses, evil eye and jinn. Using case studies, we explore the currency of beliefs amongst local populations. We address the relationship of faith and spirituality to mental well being, and illustrate religious strategies for health .

  3. Cultural Competencies, Health & Existential Beliefs

This groundbreaking course offers an overview of human existential beliefs through conception, birth, life, consciousness, mental health, death, dying,  and survival beyond. It explores the range of theories people have about well-being and causes of illness, and it presents cultural knowledge and explanatory models for health. 

This course was developed to address the needs of migrant and refugee populations in UK.  In particular, it addresses the way religious and spiritual beliefs influence how people access health services, diagnose ill health, and comply with treatment strategies. 

(20 hours, on site training, £450 per person, £2600 for 6 people)*

 

2.  Women’s Issues and Healthy Minds

Sometimes women do not speak out about things that concern them. We discuss cultural practices and migration, and ways these influence well being.  We consider topics like modesty, honour and shame; FGM (female genital mutilation); and differences between forced and arranged marriages and their influence on wellbeing.
